Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Should I make an appointment to visit your shop?
A: The Wedding Plantation was built on "walk in" brides and is as accommodating as we can be, however we also accept appointments for brides who would like the extra attention and guidance while shopping for their gown. Our appointments generally include 1 - 1 1/2 hours with a consultant and you are guaranteed a dressing room. We accept walk-in's as time permits and brides are always welcome to browse our selection at any time, however dressing room space is limited so appointments are suggested for those who plan to try on dresses.
Q: When should I buy my gown?
A: We always suggest buying when you find "the one". It can take anywhere up to 16 weeks for a gown to come in, so its always beneficial to the bride to start as early as possible. Bridesmaids generally take anywhere from 5 weeks to 16 weeks to ship, so it is also a good idea to start early there as well. Most experts agree that booking the ceremony site and reception location are the two most important tasks, followed by purchasing the gown. Traditionally brides start 6 to 18 months ahead of time.
However, last minute brides are not uncommon and we will do everything in our power to help wedding parties with little time find the perfect fashion! Some designers offer in-stock programs or rush cuts on special orders. Also, all of our gown samples are for sale off the rack if time does not permit a spacial order.
Q: Who should come bridal gown shopping with me?
A: Its great to have one or two people who will give you honest opinions, however bringing too many people to "poll the audience" is usually a recipe for disaster. In the end, the only opinion that really counts is yours. You will be the center of attention at your wedding and want to look and feel amazing.
Although we have a large shop and private dressing rooms, due to the nature of our business the bridal salon is considered a "ladies only" area. Fathers, fiancés, and male friends are welcome to wait in our reception area however they cannot accompany brides to the dressing area.
While weddings are a fun place for kids, bridal shops are not. With many fragile gowns and items, it is not a safe environment for children due to loose pins and other hazards.
Q: Do I have to pay for my gown upfront?
A: The Wedding Plantation only requires a deposit of half the total cost to hold off the rack merchandise or to place special orders.
Q: I plan on losing weight, should I wait to order my dress?
A: No. Any experienced seamstress will tell you that it is much easier and more cost efficent to take a dress in than to let it out. Because wedding gowns tend to be very ornate, it is also sometimes impossible to let the dress out because of beadwork or lace over the seams.
Q: What size gown or bridesmaids dress should I order?
A: Most bridal designers use vanity sizing and tend to differ from regular dress sizes (usually 2 to 3 sizes smaller). Your consultant will take your measurements and compare them to the size chart of the designer from whom you will be purchasing your dress. The vast majority of dresses need to be altered in some way. By taking your measurements, we are simply trying to find a size that will need the least amount of alterations. We will help you choose a size, but the final decision on the size is yours. We want to please you!
Q: Whats the difference between buying online and shopping in your store?
A: Though some internet prices may seem enticing, you'll find that you get what you pay for when comparing services offered. We've seen everything from fraudulent gowns (knock-offs) to damaged dresses, and unfortunately if you buy online, theres very little we can do in the shop to help any problems that you'll encounter. At a "brick and mortar" shop like the plantation, you'll receive personal assistance in choosing your size, you're guaranteed professional service, designer quality and authenticity on all gowns, and have all your questions answered. Your wedding gown is the most important purchase you will make for the most important day of your life and we understand that. Our experience and expertise are what makes the difference and we strive for excellence with every wedding party we service.
